Each year for charity: water’s birthday, they team up with September babies and other supporters to take on something really big. This year’s September Campaign will bring clean and safe drinking water to the Bayaka people in Central African Republic – one of the poorest and most remote countries in the world. Their goal is to raise $1.7 million with the help of individual fundraisers. 100% of the money raised will directly fund sustainable water projects.

charity: water started with a birthday party. When founder Scott Harrison turned 31, he asked everyone he knew to come to a party and bring money for clean water instead of gifts. He raised more than $15,000 and then used the money to give water to people living in a refugee camp in Uganda. In 2007 charity: water did it again, but asked others born in September to join in as well. They gave up birthday gifts and together they raised $150,000 to bring clean water to hospitals and schools in Kenya. A year later, 900 people joined the movement, and almost $1 million was raised through birthdays. This year, charity: water is doing it again — but bigger. They hope to bring clean and safe drinking water to a forgotten people in a forgotten nation: the Bayaka in Central African Republic. The 210 water projects that will serve 90,000 people will cost $1.7 million — an ambitious goal, but one they can reach with your help.

Increasing demand requires additional resources to keep costs low, ensure reliability, and reduce America’s dependence on foreign energy sources. At the same time, this growing demandmust be addressed in the context of global climate change. Consumers can make a significant difference on all these fronts by reducing demand through simple energy efficeincy measures.

In a February2008 national survey of kids ages 8 – 12, 85% of respondents believed they could lead their family to do what is needed to consume less energy in the home. The Department of Energy, in partnership with the Ad Council, have developed this website and the”What’s Your Excuse?” campaign to create a new generation of energy-conscious consumers. The new campaign highlights the simplicity of making energy efficient changes in the home and asks kids to join millions of other to make a difference by using their energy wisely.

With more than 2,000,000 members worldwide, the Alliance is a unique non-profit, non-partisan organization that is committed to educating the global community about the urgency of implementing comprehensive solutions to the climate crisis. Through its projects — Repower America, the WE Campaign, and the Reality Coalition — and its affiliated organization, The Climate Protection Action Fund, the Alliance seeks to present choices and offer changes that will protect our planet for future generations.

The Alliance draws together a diverse range of individuals and organizations by acting on its belief that the climate crisis impacts every one of us and transcends differences between political parties, faiths, geographies and cultures. It regularly partners with organizations from a broad cross-section of society including representatives of labor, faith, business, schools, women, agriculture, sportsmen, and many other communities. In doing so, the Alliance brings together faces and voices in a way that diversifies and strengthens the national network of concerned individuals who want to take action now on climate issues.

The Alliance is guided by a prestigious, bi-partisan Board of Directors that includes three Nobel Prize winners and accomplished veterans from the worlds of business, politics and environmental advocacy.

But forget about us.

Most of us have never really been thirsty. We’ve never had to leave our houses and walk 5 miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean. Yet more than 1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have clean water. It’s hard to imagine what a billion people looks like really, but one in six might be easier. One in six people in our world don’t have access to the most basic of human needs. Something we can’t imagine going 12 hours without.
Here, we’d like to introduce you to a few of those billion people. They are very real, and they need our help. They didn’t choose to be born into a village where the only source of water is a polluted swamp. And I didn’t choose to be born in a country where even the homeless have access to clean water and a toilet.

I invite you to put yourself in their shoes. Follow them on their daily journey. Carry 80 pounds of water in yellow fuel cans. Dig with their children in sand for water. Line up at a well and wait 8 hours for a turn.
Now, make a decision to help. We’re not offering grand solutions and billion dollar schemes, but instead, simple things that work. Things like freshwater wells, rainwater catchments and sand filters. For about $20 a person, we know how to help millions of people.

Start by helping one.

When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense. EFF broke new ground when it was founded in 1990 — well before the Internet was on most people’s radar — and continues to confront cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights today. From the beginning, EFF has championed the public interest in every critical battle affecting digital rights.

Blending the expertise of lawyers, policy analysts, activists, and technologists, EFF achieves significant victories on behalf of consumers and the general public. EFF fights for freedom primarily in the courts, bringing and defending lawsuits even when that means taking on the US government or large corporations. By mobilizing more than 50,000 concerned citizens through our Action Centers, EFF beats back bad legislation. In addition to advising policymakers, EFF educates the press and public.

EFF is a donor-funded nonprofit and depends on your support to continue successfully defending your digital rights. Litigation is particularly expensive; because two-thirds of our budget comes from individual donors, every contribution is critical to helping EFF fight — and win — more cases.

Since our founding in 1990, we have provided lifesaving services, such as housing, medical and mental health care, meals, job training, drug treatment, HIV prevention education, and social support to more than 20,000 homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS.

Housing Works also runs social enterprise businesses that raise millions of dollars every year to help pay for the services that we provide, spread awareness of our mission, and provide jobs to graduates of our Job Training Program. Our best-known businesses are Housing Works Thrift Shops, a chain of upscale thrift shops located throughout New York City, and the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe, a used bookstore, literary hub and concert venue located in Soho in downtown Manhattan.

Requests range from pencils for a poetry writing unit, to violins for a school recital, to microscope slides for a biology class.

Then, you can browse project requests and give any amount to the one that makes your eye twinkle. Once a project reaches its funding goal, we deliver the materials to the school.

You’ll get photos of your project taking place, a thank-you letter from the teacher, and a cost report showing how each dollar was spent. If you give over $100, you’ll also receive hand-written thank-you letters from the students.

At DonorsChoose.org, you can give as little as $1 and get the same level of choice, transparency, and feedback that is traditionally reserved for someone who gives millions.

We call it citizen philanthropy.

Over the past 10 years, and because of the many individuals and organizations that have invested their talent, knowledge and time, we have become the largest and most credible organization supporting community-based design and development. By contributing to our Chapters, the Design Fellowship Program and The Open Architecture Network (www.openarchitecturenetwork.org) we can all have a hand in supporting individuals who share a passion for sustainable, community-centered design.
